BioLabs San Diego Launches Southern California Operations With Biocom as Founding Partner; Innovation Center for Life Science Startups Slated for Fall 2016 Opening

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - July 26, 2016) -

  • Premium co-working lab facility designed to help startups go further, faster on limited capital investment now accepting applications for fall 2016 occupancy at the new GENESIS at Campus Point complex in San Diego, Calif.
  • Announces first sponsors -- global pharmaceutical companies: Boehringer Ingelheim, Novartis, Sanofi, and law firms: Gunderson Dettmer, Sheppard Mullin, and Stuart Kane

Life sciences entrepreneurs looking for flexible, move-in-ready laboratory and office space to launch and grow their early-stage companies can start applying now for BioLabs San Diego, located in the heart of the Southern California life science cluster. Biocom, California's leading trade association for the life sciences industry, is helping launch the site as Founding Partner. As part of the agreement, BioLabs residents will become members of Biocom during their tenure at BioLabs San Diego, eligible for all associated benefits. In addition, BioLabs will host industry-specific programming, social, and networking events that will be open to the wider life sciences community. Initially, the BioLabs San Diego site at 10210 Campus Point Drive will be able to accommodate up to 15 new companies. Companies can start with a single bench, and scale up as they grow.

Established by the same people and built on the same principles as the highly successful LabCentral co-working facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts, BioLabs San Diego is part of BioLabs' growing network of facilities. They offer flexible, fully equipped, and permitted shared laboratory and office spaces with inspired designs that foster interaction and collaboration -- as well as concierge service, technical, and administrative support. As with all BioLabs sites, the San Diego innovation center will feature programming and significant networking opportunities with industry leaders and potential investors. Designed by a team of scientists and entrepreneurs with decades of experience in business formation and startup success -- BioLabs' proven model allows startups to focus precious resources on advancing their science and building their companies -- taking them further, faster on limited capital investment.

"We are very excited to be opening in the Southern California biotech cluster, where we expect to be a catalyst of innovation," said BioLabs Founder Johannes Fruehauf, M.D., Ph.D. "A year from now, I expect that we will see BioLabs San Diego abuzz with folks from big pharma, the venture world, first-time entrepreneurs, and repeat comers as well as science wizards. We provide them with a platform to move their science forward, exchange ideas and collaborate, advance their partnering and make deals, and in some cases, to fail faster and cheaper, or to pivot seamlessly to the next great idea. We depend on our partners and sponsors for our success. To that end, we are delighted that Biocom has chosen to partner with BioLabs San Diego to support early-stage companies toward successful launches -- a testament to the strong track record we have delivered to-date in our other co-working facilities in operation over the past several years. We are especially grateful for the support that we've received from our early pharmaceutical company sponsors, Boehringer Ingelheim, Novartis, and Sanofi, as well as from our law firm sponsors, Gunderson Dettmer, Sheppard Mullin and Stuart Kane."

Commenting on the San Diego location, Susie Harborth, co-founder and managing director of BioLabs San Diego, said, "We designed BioLabs San Diego's ready-to-go, flexible lab space for startups to fill a significant unmet need in Southern California. Not only is San Diego home to some of the most innovative companies and leading research institutions, it is one of the best locations to form a new company. Whether local or international, we welcome the opportunity to work with companies interested in having a presence in San Diego."

President and CEO of Biocom, Joe Panetta, commented, "Biocom chose to be BioLabs' San Diego Founding Partner, as its work is in perfect alignment with our goal of accelerating success for the life science industry. A big part of our mission is to focus on and foster the development of our earliest-stage companies. This partnership reflects our commitment to the very smallest entrepreneur with a vision to have an impact on human health."
